HILLSBOROUGH, NC. — Human-grade, fresh pet food company Viva Raw issued a voluntary recall of its Duck recipes for dogs and cats toward the end of January. The recall involves four products for dogs and cats.
The recall involves one lot, #22853, of the company’s Duck recipes: Viva Duck for Dogs (Ground), Viva Duck for Dogs (Chunked), Viva Duck for Cats, and Viva Pure Duck. The formulas from the lot were distributed from Oct. 24, 2023, through Dec. 7, 2023, to more than 1,500 customers.
According to the company, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received a consumer complaint about the Viva Duck for Dogs (Chunked) recipe from Lot #22853. The FDA then collected a sample from the consumer’s home for testing in January, which tested positive for Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. Following this, Viva Raw recalled the entire lot and notified consumers, telling them to discard the affected products.
According to Viva Raw, it has only received one customer complaint relating to the lot and has no confirmation that the product has caused any illness in humans or pets.
“We are conducting a detailed root-cause analysis in our USDA facility to ensure we continue to exceed the highest industry food safety standards, and are committed to continuing to push the boundaries for how safe, fresh pet food is made,” the company released in a statement.
