WESTCHESTER, ILL. — Ingredion Incorporated recently introduced a new proprietary line of pulse-based ingredients for pet food, food and beverage manufacturers in the United States and Canada.
The new pulse-based ingredient portfolio, Prista, includes HOMECRAFT® Prista P 101 pea flour, VITESSENCE® Prista P 155 pea protein concentrate, and VITESSENCE® Prista P 360 faba bean protein concentrate. The company shared these three are the “first of many” for its new Prista line.
Pritsa ultra-performance solutions offer taste, nutrition and functionality attributes to help processors fuel growth in the plant-based protein space, Ingredion stated. The line addresses “off-flavors” that pose challenges for conventional dry-milled pulses, including bitter tastes and other sensory shortcomings caused by anti-nutrients.
These ingredients can be labeled simply as “pea flour,” “pea protein” or “faba bean protein,” lending a hand to processors looking to incorporate gluten-, soy- and GMO-free clean-label ingredients. HOMECRAFT Prista P 101 pea flour offers 12% protein on a dry basis, fiber and micronutrients, VITESSENCE Prista P 155 pea protein concentrate provides 55% protein on a dry basis, and VITESSENCE Prista P 360 faba bean concentrate offers 60% protein on a dry basis.
“The ultra-performance Prista pea flour and faba and pea concentrates are on-trend for pet food as the ingredients provide plant protein and clean label appeal,” said Patrick Luchsinger, marketing manager of nutrition and pet food at Ingredion. “The new pulse-based Prista line is ideal in pet treats when a cold process is employed – for example, in the cold extrusion of semi-moist pet treats. The cleaner, less beany flavor of Ingredion’s ultra-performance pulse flour and concentrates allows for the creation of more palatable pet food and treats compared to its conventional pulse counterparts.”
These pulse ingredients are designed for low-microbial applications and can be used in higher levels than conventional pulse ingredients, Ingredion stated, so processors can incorporate more plant protein in their products.
Prista pulses are sourced in North America and processed by Ingredion using a proprietary process that does not include chemicals or additives and does not generate wastewater. This clean process coupled with traceability and the inherent sustainability offered by plant-proteins can help brands meet increasingly stringent demands for more sustainable, “better-for-you” products.
“Purpose-built to break through taste and use level barriers, our new line of ultra-performance Prista pulse ingredients enables our customers to bring to market more of the plant-based protein products consumers want,” said Yadu Dar, business director of plant-based proteins for Ingredion in the US and Canada. “Made possible by our proprietary technology, we are excited to introduce these innovative ingredients to brands in the food, beverage and pet food markets.”
Ingredion plans to roll out Prista to other regions in the future.
