Many pet food companies took this year’s theme to heart, debuting pet nutrition innovations that speak to numerous evolving trends throughout the industry.
Innovation was top of mind for several pet nutrition companies during Global Pet Expo. From new, innovative formats to functional nutrition targeting specific health conditions and everything in between, flip through this slideshow to see some of the products that made their debut at this year’s show.
This sustainably minded pet food company teased its new wet dog food formulas, packaged in cans reminiscent of tinned fish for humans. The new complete-and-balanced diets are formulated with fresh Artic Char, Salmon, and Salmon & Cod sourced from Iceland. They also offer full ingredient traceability, in-line with Open Farm’s overall mission, and the packaging is 100% recyclable.
NaturVet’s new Breed Specific Soft Chew supplement line lasers in on the specific health challenges that face certain dog breeds. The supplements aim to offer enhanced support to five breed categories: Toy/Small, Bully, Sport/Working, Doodle and Giant. Each supplement is formulated with a blend of wholesome ingredients and antioxidants, providing support to common challenges experienced by each breed, like joint, allergy, immune, heart, gut, anxiety and dental health.
Seeking to further differentiate itself in the minimally processed pet food segment, ZIWI Peak introduced its new Steam & Dried dog and cat food line. The company leverages a micro-steam process to provide unique texture followed by an air-drying process that helps lock in nutrients. The formulas include up to 90% meat, organs, seafood and fish oil to meet the high protein needs of canines and felines.
Lord Jameson’s newest product aims to help dog parents more easily administer medication to their dogs. The Pill Hider line features a variety of highly palatable flavors, including Apple Pie, PB+J, and Cookie Dough, to help disguise pills and decrease the chance of a dog spitting out medication. Similar to Lord Jameson’s other products, the Pill Hiders contain no preservatives, artificial ingredients or fillers, and they are also gluten-free and USDA organic.
Wellness Pet Company’s newest dog treat line under the Old Mother Hubbard® brand offers two varieties of all-natural, soft-baked treats: Peanut Butter and Banana, and Bacon, Oats and Maple. The line serves to provide a more indulgent treating experience to canines, hence the name.
NPIC’s Flossta by N-Bone dog dental chew is designed with a floss-like form factor to help clean a dog’s teeth and gums in hard-to-reach places. The chew is formulated with natural herbs, including parsley and fennel, to help freshen breath. They are available in three flavors to entice consumption and are free from wheat, corn and artificial ingredients.
Fromm Family Foods is taking humanization to the next level through its Diner Breakfast wet dog foods, which builds upon its Fromm Diner line. The line is inspired by American breakfast foods typically found at diners with a retro feel. The Breakfast line includes three recipes: Betty’s Biscuits & Gravy, made with pork cooked in broth with eggs and potatoes; Maddie’s Morning Hash, made with diced beef and sweet potatoes cooked in broth; and Sam’s Steak & Eggs, made with diced beef cooked in broth with potatoes and eggs.
Stella & Chewy’s Meowfulls represent the company’s first freeze-dried raw treats for cats. The treats are formulated with probiotics to support digestive health and salmon oil to support skin and coat health. They are available in three varieties: Cage-Free Turkey & Duck Recipe, Sustainably Source Whitefish & Salmon Recipe, and Cage-Free Turkey & Chicken Recipe. All the proteins are responsibly or sustainably sourced.
Swedencare’s Scoopables with ProDen PlaqueOff technology pairs pet treats with oral health benefits. The product offers tiny bites, similar to kibble, formulated with the company’s PlaqueOff technology, as well as sustainably harvested kelp, to help address plaque, tartar and bad breath in pets. The line includes three varieties: one for small and medium breed dogs, one for large and giant breed dogs, and one for cats.
Icelandic co-manufacturer Officer introduced its new wet snacks for dogs and cats, designed for pets on the go. The all-natural treats are formulated with up to 95% fish protein and packed in individual fish-shaped packaging.
Dr. Pol’s new products focus on wet dog and cat foods under the Limited Ingredient and Incredi-Pol® Favorites lines. The canned wet foods are designed and developed using Dr. Pol’s 50-plus years of veterinary experience to support overall health in pets, and complement the brand’s dry pet food offerings.
Nulo Pet Foods’ latest pet food innovation introduces a new format to the industry: cold-pressed. The minimally processed diets leverage a low and slow, smokehouse-style cooking method specifically designed to lock-in nutrient integrity, preserving higher levels of vitamins, minerals and amino acids that are often depleted using conventional, high-heat kibble manufacturing, according to Nulo. The new format aims fulfill a gap between conventional dry kibble and freeze- or air-dried formats. The ultra-premium Cold-Pressed line includes four meat-based recipes for puppies and adult dogs.
Bredwell, a dog food and treat brand and retailer, made its debut at Global Pet Expo, showcasing its SMOOCHES dog “candies.” The heart-shaped treats are formulated with seasonal ingredients, as well as carob, peanut butter, strawberry and other ingredients. The treats are produced in-house at the company’s retail store in Barrington, Ill., alongside its customized dog foods. The treats align with the hyper-humanization trend, and placed third in the Modern Pet category in the New Product Showcase Best in Show Awards.
Ark Naturals’ newest product innovation is a line of cat dental treats, dubbed Kiss Me-ow. The line features three treat formats, all targeting a specific aspect of oral health in felines: Cleaning Crunchy Chews, Strengthening Crunchy Chews and Lickable Dental Treats. They are available in chicken, salmon and tuna flavors to ensure palatability.
Animals Like Us’ new dog diet hopes to bridge the gap between premium kibble and even more premium freeze-dried and fresh diets. RawMix50 pairs high-protein kibble with whole, freeze-dried chunks of meat and organs to create a “granola” for dogs. The formula is available in three recipes: Cage-Free Chicken, Grass-Fed Beef and Grass-Fed Lamb.
Aiming to bring the “next generation of dental chews” to the market, Groovies, a brand by Koowill, teased its new dental chews for cats. The product leverages the brand’s DenalFit Technology, which is specifically designed to fit the oral structure of felines. The extruded chews feature angled grooves and ridges to get in between cat’s teeth and promote gentle abrasion, offering 360-degree cleaning action.
Dr. Elsey’s newest pet food line — cleanprotein™ — lasers in on providing felines with high-protein nutrition. The line includes dry kibble diets, canned pâtés and wet pouched formats, all inspired by the high protein levels found in a cat’s natural prey. Additionally, the line is low in oxalate by excluding plants commonly found in traditional feline formulas, according to the company, to help support kidney function and an active lifestyle.
GivePet’s latest Freeze-Dried Cat Treats debuted at the show, expanding upon the company’s existing treat offerings. The new formulas include Purrfect Cast, a salmon treat, and Meowsterpiece, a chicken breast treat. Like all of GivePet’s treat products, proceeds from each purchase go toward supporting shelter cats in need. The freeze-dried treats won first place in the Cat category of the New Product Showcase Best in Show Awards.
In addition to dog treats, Wellness Pet Company also showcased its new wet cat treats. The Lickable Treats are complete-and-balanced pureed treats in a handheld format. They are formulated with prebiotic fiber to support digestive health, and select recipes are also formulated to support immune and skin and coat health.
Pet Releaf’s new supplements are the brand’s first non-hemp-based products for pets. The Fish-Free Omega 3 supplement is a highly concentrated alternative to fish oil, providing fatty acids to pets through the renewable resource of algae. The Postbiotic supplement comes in a powdered format to support gut health. Both supplements are formulated with sustainably sourced, plant-based ingredients.
This pet food company debuted several new innovations, including its new Sensitivities Limited Ingredient Grain-Free Salmon Recipe for cats, and expanded offerings of its Go! Solutions Boosters for dogs and cats. The cat food is formulated with premium, single-sourced salmon protein, prebiotic fiber and other limited ingredients to avoid common feline allergens and support overall wellness. Go! Solutions Boosters are wet meal toppers that target specific need states in dogs and cats, from weight management to joint care.
Pure Cravings is evolving its mercury-tested portfolio to include new wet cat treat products. The company’s new wet cat treats are formulated with premium proteins, and the fish included in each formula is mercury tested against extremely strict levels. Creamy Treats come in squeeze tube packaging and are available in six recipes. Pure Cravings also teased its new Mousse wet food formats, building upon its current canned offerings.
This new bone broth product by pet wellness brand Furvor is formulated with human-grade, all-natural ingredients including proteins, collagen, amino acids, fats, vitamins and minerals. The broth is specifically designed to support muscle and joint health in dogs with mobility issues.
Swell, a frozen dog treat company, showcased its hyper-humanized products during the show, like It’s My Barkday Triple Berry Dog Gelato Treat (pictured here). In addition to It’s My Barkday Gelato, the company offers five other gelato treats, as well as three Gourmet Dog Food Toppers, to provide dogs with a boost of nutrients. All of Swell’s products are formulated with limited, natural ingredients and are handmade.
Fera Pets significantly expanded its premium pet supplement line, highlighting its three latest supplements: Collagen Plus, Whole Food Vitamin and Postbiotics Plus. Similar to Fera’s other products, the new supplements are formulated with high-quality ingredients to support specific need states in both dogs and cats. Collagen Plus targets joint, skin and gut health while also supporting strong bones and muscles; Whole Food Vitamin leverages a blend of fruits, vegetables and organ meats to complement a pet’s existing diet; and Postbiotics Plus provides gut health benefits and immune support.
Carnivore Meat Company’s Vital Essentials brand showed off the latest addition to its Vital Essentials Raw Bar line: Freeze-Dried Raw Bar Quail Snacks. The product is a whole, freeze-dried quail, providing high-quality protein, B vitamins and Omega 3 fatty acids to dogs. According to the brand, the treat offers various health benefits to canines.
Jiminy’s new range of insect-based treats include functional Dental Chews and Chewy Treats. The Dental Chews are made with protein from black soldier flay larvae (BSFL) to support oral health. The Chewy Treats are soft training treats made with sustainable proteins from insects, including crickets and grubs. The Dental Chews are available in four varieties for dogs of all sizes, and the Chewy Treats are available in four recipes.
In addition to its canned, wet dog foods, Open Farm also showed off its new Goodbowl line. The new line uses sustainably and ethically sourced ingredients, offering nutritious formulations for dogs and cats in oven-baked kibble formats. Goodbowl includes five recipes, three for dogs and two for cats.
GREENIES™ is leveraging its dental expertise to include its first meal offerings: GREENIES SMART ESSENTIALS. The line includes five varieties of dry kibble, all designed to support six vital areas of canine health: digestion, teeth, skin and coat, immune system, bones and joints, and muscles including the heart. The company also debuted its GREENIES SMART TOPPER™ Meal Complement, a wet dog food topper designed to support the six vital areas of canine health.
Alongside its dog and cats treats, Wellness Pet Company also teased its Wellness CORE+ line for felines. Available in dry and wet formats, the line touts scientifically proven, natural nutrition fortified with vitamins, minerals and trace nutrients to support overall health, as well as specific need states including digestive health, hairball control, healthy weight, immune health and skin and coat.
