SUPERZOO 2023 in August was a hotspot for introducing new pet treats and meal toppers, but innovative product launches in this category of the market flowed all year long and showed no signs of slowing in the last six months. Gott Pet Products debuted two new flavors under its Charlee Bear Grain Free Crunch line in early July. The new flavors include Peanut Butter & Banana and Beef & Cheese, and complement the existing line’s focus as a grain-free, low-calorie, natural snack for treating and training dogs.
Emerging brand A Better Treat expanded its portfolio in July with the addition of USDA Organic Pumpkin Dog and Cat Treats, a freeze-dried, no-mess take on the ingredient known for its digestive health benefits. The treats are single-ingredient — featuring only USDA Organic pumpkin — as well as grain-, gluten- and GMO-free.
Spectrum Brands introduced several new cat treats designed to “make treat time more fun for felines and pet owners,” according to the company. The lineup includes Meowee! Savory Spoonables, Meowee! Starry Spinners, and Meowee! Triple Flavor Kabobs, each available in several recipes and crafted alongside veterinarians.
Worldwise, Inc. unleashed a new pet treat and chew brand at SUPERZOO 2023, dubbed Treatly. The line includes long-lasting chews, rawhide free chews, collagen chews, freeze-dried treats, and vegan treats. All are formulated with all natural, high-quality ingredients based on human-grade food standards, according to Worldwise.
Adding to its functional line, Petcurean announced the launch of Go! Solutions Boosters at SUPERZOO 2023 in August. For dogs, the product is intended as a flavor-enhancing meal topper, while the feline formulations can also serve as complete-and-balanced meals. The toppers are available in eight formulations for both dogs and cats, targeting tranquility, joint care, immune health and digestive health.
SodaPup introduced two new products, Dogtastic Gourmet Peanut Butter for Dogs and Dogtastic Jelly Shots, in August. Dogtastic Gourmet Peanut Butter for Dogs is a nutritious treat made from all-natural, American-grown peanuts and produced in Tennessee. It is xylitol free, blended with produce, and available in four flavors. Dogtastic Jelly Shots are flavored gelatin mixes that can be easily transformed into flavorful dog treats using boiling water or animal-based broth for additional health benefits. They are available in two flavors: Cranberry and Mango.
Two new formulas joined Stewart’s existing freeze-dried, functional dog treat line in August. The new Immunity treats are formulated with chicken, vegetables and ingredients that boost immunity, according to parent company BrightPet Nutrition Group. The Focus treats are designed as an engaging reward, formulated with salmon and vegetables.
Phelps Pet Products unveiled the first cat treat recipes under its Disney Tables Scraps™ line at SUPERZOO 2023. The cat treats include Fish ‘N’ Chips Recipe, with packaging inspired by Alice in Wonderland’s Cheshire Cat, and Chicken Mac & Cheese Recipe, inspired by Minnie Mouse. The Fish ‘N’ Chips Recipe is formulated with sustainably sourced salmon and upcycled ingredients, and the Chicken Mac & Cheese includes US-sourced chicken and upcycled ingredients.
Shepherd Boy Farms debuted a new line of goat’s milk meal toppers with a unique twist at SUPERZOO 2023. The shelf-stable blends are formulated with freeze-dried pure milk from pasture-fed goats raised without antibiotics or added hormones. Pet owners can add water and shake to turn the product into a goat’s milk topper or treat. Sold in 16- and 32-oz bottles, the Freeze-Dried Raw Goat’s Milk Blends are available in four blends: Classic, Golden Blend, Super Greens Blend, and Super Fruit Blend.
Lord Jameson expanded its offerings in August with the introduction of Love Puffs. The new treats are available in five flavors — Wild Berri, Party Time, Sweet Beat, Crispy Orchard and Go Nanas — all formulated to be highly digestible with organic sorghum, a high-protein gluten-free grain, as well as iron and antioxidants.
AnimalBiome, a gut-focused brand for pets, unveiled its latest innovation — Fish Bits — at SUPERZOO 2023. The single-ingredient meal topper is formulated with armored catfish, an invasive species currently threatening freshwater ecosystems across North America. This gives the product a sustainability angle alongside a high-protein, low-carb formulation designed to support healthy body condition and gut health in dogs and cats.
Fresh pet food brand MIGOS DOG, which was founded by celebrity chef and cookbook author Caroline Artiss, introduced a new line of jerky treats for dogs at SUPERZOO 2023. The new line features four products — Beef Heart Jerky, Angus Beef Jerky, Beef Liver Jerky, and Turkey Breast Jerky. They join the company’s existing lineup of flash-frozen, complete-and-balanced dog food formulas, as well as a nutritional supplement powder.
Barkworthies added 12 SKUs to its hickory-smoked dog chew line in September, following the initial launch of the line in May with eight products. New additions include Cheeky Chews, Scapulas, Cow Ears, Gullet Bites, Bully Bites, Braided Pork Pizzle, Gullet Sticks, Duck Feet, Marrow Bones, Tendon Strips and two sampler packs, one from small dogs and one for medium/large dogs. With the addition of these 12 products, the full line includes 20 hickory-smoked chews.
Healthybud teased the launch of its Mini Training Treats for dogs in late September. Formulated with science-backed superfoods like Lion’s Mane and Reishi mushrooms, as well as salmon oil and pumpkin, the treats are human-grade, grain-free and low-calorie. Functional ingredients are included to help pet parents train their dogs with wellness in mind, according to the company.
Champion Petfoods announced the launch of Chewy Tenders, a line of premium, high-protein jerky treats for dogs under its ACANA brand. The treats are formulated with superfoods, bone broth, honey and other functional ingredients to support overall health and wellness in dogs. They are available in three varieties: Immune System Support, Hip and Joint Health, and Skin, Coat and Digestive Support.
After acquiring certain assets of Because Animals (now known as BioCraft Pet Nutrition), CULT Food Science Corp. announced the official relaunch of Noochies! Freeze Dried Dog Snacks. The cruelty-free treats are made with patented ingredient Bmmune® and do not contain any animal-derived ingredients.
Cooper & Friends added a line of functional jerky treats for dogs to its portfolio in early October. The Functional Jerky line features five low-calorie, protein rich and sustainably made formulas targeting digestion, mobility and immune health. Products in the line include Pork Loin Jerky, Chicken Breast Jerky, Insects & Salmon Jerky, Tilapia Fillet Jerky, and Round Beef Jerky.
Solid Gold, a holistic premium pet food brand owned by H&H Group North America, expanded its plasma-powered nutrientboost line for dogs to include three new meal toppers: Air Dried Meal & Topper, Meatball Meal & Topper, and Protein Shreds Meal Topper. The Air Dried and Meatball portfolios are available in chicken and beef varieties and can be served as a complete-and-balanced diet or as a meal topper. The Protein Shreds product is intended as a meal topper only.
Complementing its new nutrientboost meal toppers, Solid Gold also launch four functional treats under the line. The treats are available in four formulas, each providing a specific health benefit: Gut Health, Mobility, Performance, and Skin & Coat. Each treat is formulated with the nutrientboost blend, which contains superfoods, amino acids and clean plasma to help support nutrient absorption and digestive health.
Following the official relaunch of its Noochies! Freeze Dried Dog Snacks, CULT Food Science Corp. reintroduced Noochies! Freeze Dried Cat Snacks, the first vegan cat treats in North America, according to the company. The treats are made with patented ingredients Bmmune® and Bflora® and do not contain any animal-derived ingredients.
TasFoods Limited, a Tasmanian food company with several brands in the dairy and poultry categories, announced its entrance into the Australian pet treat market with its new premium line, Isle & Sky. The line is supported by TasFoods’ Nichols Poultry division, which produces several Tasmanian chicken products for human consumption. Nichols Poultry’s protein and clean-label philosophy will be translated to the pet treat line to benefit dogs and cats across Australia.
Farm to Pet took holiday festivities to the dogs with the launch of its seasonal treat line in November. The dehydrated, single-ingredient treats are made from human-grade, farm-fresh turkey or chicken breast. They were made available in two varieties: Chicken Chips and Turkey Feast.
As in years past, Blue Buffalo rang in the holiday season with crunchy biscuit and soft treats for dogs. The company’s Santa Snacks Oatmeal & Cinnamon crunchy biscuits were available in three seasonal shapes — stars, Christmas trees and gingerbread people. Santa Snacks Tasty Chicken Recipe soft treats also came in festive shapes, including stars, Christmas trees and snowmen.
Jones Soda Co. introduced a line of craft beverages for dogs in late November. Available in three flavors — Chicken Stock, Beef Stock, and Turkey and Gravy — the line was developed in collaboration with veterinarians and dog parents with natural, human-grade and functional ingredients to serve as a treat, meal topper or boost of hydration for dogs.
Calibra, a premium pet food brand by animal health technology company Covetrus®, launched its new line of veterinary dog treats in the European Union and Latin America. Calibra Veterinary Diet Snacks were specifically designed to compliment the brand’s veterinary diets. Formulas include Weight Management, Gastrointestinal Support, Vitality Support, Mobility Support, Hypoallergenic, and Urinary Care.
Emerging pet food brand Sprankles For Pets launched its new line of freeze-dried raw toppers and treats. The products are made from freeze-dried raw, single-sourced protein and contain 96% meat, organs and bones. The toppers are formulated with single-sourced proteins and can be fed as a topper, treat or complete-and-balanced meal, while the treats are single-ingredient and all-natural. Sprankles’ Freeze-Dried Raw Toppers are available in Beef and Chicken recipes, and the treats are available in six varieties: Chicken Hearts, Beef Liver, Duck Hearts, Chicken Breast, Lamb Liver and Beef Hearts.
