At the end of 2021, NutriSource launched its first meal topper line – Come-pooch-a – inspired by kombucha. The line includes three flavors, all formulated with postbiotics to support hydration and digestion in dogs. The toppers can be added to a water dish or fed over kibble as a palatability and hydration booster.
With its new supplement line, Zesty Paws is focusing on small dogs. The Mini Bites line features three of the company’s best-selling formulations — Advanced Calming Mini Bites, Aller-Immune Mini Bites and 8-in-1 Mini Bites — each sized down to accommodate smaller dog breeds.
In January 2022, Sky Wellness relaunched its D Oh Gee CBD wellness brand. The brand now includes three broad-spectrum, THC-free CBD products developed to help support joint health and mobility. The products include Dog Oil Drops Bacon Flavor, Daily Turkey Chewies and Daily Duck Bites.
Zesty Paws launched its new Tear Stain Bites dog supplements to support eye health. Formulated with eyebright herb extract, Ceylon cinnamon extract and D alpha-tocopherol acetate, the chicken-flavored supplement supports vision and immune health and provides antioxidant support.
With concerns of dog obesity rising, Tevra Brands introduced its SlimPaws weight loss supplement. The soft chew supplements contain a blend of leucine and pyridoxine (vitamin B6) patented by Nusirt Biopharama Inc., to help dogs manage their weight. The supplements work by creating a fasting effect, similar to decreasing caloric intake.
Amidst nationwide cat food shortages, “I and love and you” released two lines of wet cat food: XOXOs and Feed Meow. Both product lines feature the company’s core ingredients of real meat and fresh ingredients along with non-GMO, grain- and carrageenan-free protein. XOXOs is available in six flavors and Feed Meow is available in three flavors.
Milk-Bone, owned by the J.M. Smucker Co., expanded its existing line of dog biscuits and chew treats. The brand released two new biscuit varieties, Stacked and Stuffed, and two new chew varieties, Flavor Twists and Flavor Braids.
At the end of January, NutriSource released its NutriSource Superstars Training Rewards Treats as part of its new philanthropic initiative. All profits made from the new small, star-shaped treats will be donated to several US organizations. The Superstars Training Rewards Treats are available in chicken, beef and cheddar flavors and are low in calories and nutrient dense.
Better Choice Company introduced its new brand of pet food: Halo Elevate. The natural pet food is formulated with 90% protein from animals and 610 million probiotics to support digestive, heart and immune health, hip and joint mobility, and healthy skin and coat. Halo Elevate officially hit shelves at Pet Supplies Plus locations in April.
Wet Noses Natural Dog Treat Company expanded its Doggy Delirious brand with two new biscuit treat flavors. The biscuit treats are now available in BBQ Maple Bacon and Smokey Turkey & Apple and are formulated with human-grade ingredients. The new products were part of the relaunch of Doggy Delirious.
Animal health company Virbac entered the pet food industry with its Veterinary HPM Pet Nutrition, a food specifically formulated for spayed and neutered pets. The line includes two cat foods and four dog foods. The Veterinary HPM Spay and Neuter line features: Junior Cat Food, Adult Cat Food, Small & Toy Junior Dog Food, Small & Toy Adult Dog Food, Large & Medium Junior Dog Food and Large & Medium Adult Dog Food.
In February, Petaluma launched Sweet Potato Jerky treats made to serve as an alternative to traditional meat jerky dog treats. The treats are formulated with just sweet potatoes, making them completely plant based, and vitamins, minerals and fiber to support digestion.
Canadian startup, HOPE Pet Foods, introduced its first complete-and-balanced dog food formulated with black soldier fly larvae (BSFL). The limited-ingredient, oven-baked diet will feature insect protein, dried yeast, kelp and plants to provide all essential nutrients.
Waggin Water released its functional dog water products, which boasts three varieties: Original, CBD Water and Dental Water. The company announced plans to add Probiotic Water, Hip & Joint Water, Vitamin Water, Electrolyte Water to its lineup. The ready-to-drink waters are available in 12-oz resealable bowls, 6-count packages, half-gallons and three-liter boxes.
Bully Max’s new dehydrated dog food, which is reconstituted into a fresh diet with the addition of water, is an expansion on the brand’s new Classic Series dog food line. Bully Max Instant Fresh Dog Food provides the benefits of a natural raw diet but with more vitamins and minerals compared to traditional raw dog food. Produced in a human-grade kitchen, the food is formulated with natural ingredients, including chicken, barley, oats and rice to provide all dogs with energy, shiny coats, healthy skin and to support digestion.
Bocce’s new soft, chewy cat treats are formulated with all-natural ingredients. The heart-shaped treats are available in five different flavors: Sushi Sushi contains salmon and seaweed; Fishy Fishy contains whitefish and carrots; Catnip Munch contains chicken and catnip; Moooo Moooo contains beef and cheddar; and Chikn Chikn contains chicken and sweet potato. The cat treats are Bocce’s first cat food product.
With all-vegetable dog meals in high demand, UK startup Butternut Box launched its first vegetable-based dog food meal: Ready Steady Veggie. The dog meal includes a 60% vegetable-base made from butternut squash, sweet potatoes, carrots and green beans and is also formulated with protein from eggs, as well as plant-based protein from peas and potatoes.
E-commerce, direct-to-consumer pet nutrition subscription service Tails.com unveiled its Nourish & Protect line. The new functional formulas are the company’s first pet food to be available in-store. Designed by veterinarians and nutrition experts, Nourish & Protect targets key concerns: weight, gut health and immunity in dogs.
Trisha Yearwood expanded her Pet Collection with a line of pet food and treats. The Trisha Yearwood Pet Collection pet food line boasts kibbles, stews, soft treats and jerky formulas for dogs. The dog food and treats include Complete and Balanced Dry Dog Food, featuring Beef Chicken & Pork, Chicken & Vegetables, and Pork & Rice formulas; Dog Stew, featuring Beef Chicken & Pork, Chicken & Vegetables and Pork & Rice formulas; Dog Soft Treats, featuring BBQ Beef and Chicken Apple & Bacon flavors; and Dog Jerky, featuring Beef & Sweet Potato and Chicken & Pumpkin flavors.
Tucker’s Raw Frozen debuted its 20-lb bulk boxes of dog food, which officially launched in April. Each bulk box contains 20, 1-lb raw frozen patties available in nine different formulas: beef, chicken, pork and beef, pork and bison, pork and duck, pork and lamb, salmon, turf & surf, and turkey. To maintain food safety and freshness, each patty is individually wrapped and vacuum sealed.
The new cat food paté recipe is formulated with whole foods and includes two varieties: Turkey and Pumpkin and Chicken and Pumpkin. Both recipes contain pumpkin, spearmint, cod liver oil, eggshell powder, flaxseed oil, dried kelp, taurine and thiamine mononitrate. The new food is stored frozen and served fresh.
Champion Petfoods’ brand Orijen introduced two new pet foods: ORIJEN® GUARDIAN 8™ cat food and ORIJEN® Kitten. Both new kibbles are formulated with fresh or raw poultry, wild-caught fish and loaded with vitamins and minerals to support digestion, brain health and muscle development and maintenance.
The supplement company launched its new Romeo’s Agility Chews in partnership with Ziggy Marley. The new dog supplement chews offer functional benefits and contain hemp. Formulated with turmeric, hemp extract, shiitake and turkey tail mushrooms, coconut, cordyceps, peanut butter, quinoa seeds and rosemary, the peanut-butter chews enhance agility, fight inflammation, and support mental and physical well-being.
Big Easy Blends’ new MyPup Dog Slushies are formulated with vitamins, contain no dairy or grains, and are manufactured in a human-grade facility. The slushies are available in three different flavors — Beef, Chicken and Peanut Butter — and provide dogs a boost of hydration.
Cloud Star’s new Wag More Bark Less® Sandwich Cookies are formulated with human-grade, simple ingredients and manufactured in the United States. The new human-grade dog treat features a peanut butter filling sandwiched between baked biscuits. According to the company, sandwich cookies are a leading dog treat format, but do not have a significant presence in pet specialty retail.
The company’s daily dog supplements come in four varieties: Ease for joint and hip support, Relax for calming anxiety, Soothe for skin and coat health, and Detox for immune support. Developed in partnership with Veterinarian Jeff Powers, DVM, and Animal Nutritionist Serge Boutet, the supplement can help alleviate common dog ailments, including anxiety, stress, digestion, itching and hip and joint mobility. The supplement chews are formulated with organic ingredients and cricket protein to support the company’s dedication to sustainability.
Wellness Pet Company’s new Wellness® CORE® Digestive Health Plant-Based Kibble and Bowl Boosters® Immune Health Toppers are formulated with more sustainable protein from plants and eggs. The dog kibble is formulated with digestive enzymes, prebiotic fibers and probiotics to support a dog’s digestive health. The Bowl boosters are formulated with cranberries, papaya, carrots, sweet potatoes, kelp, zinc and vitamin E to provide immune support.
In March, Earth Animal expanded its Dr. Bob Goldstein’s WISDOM line with the introduction of a new formula, using an invasive species of catfish. The new dog food is formulated with Chesapeake Bay catfish and premium ingredients to offer balanced nutrition. The food is also formulated with marine microalgae to offer a concentrated form of Omega 3 fatty acids, which helps support healthy heart, joints, skin and coat, and brain development in dogs.
A Pup Above joined the bulk-box bandwagon, offering 20-lb bulk boxes of human-grade, sous-vide style dog food patties. The bulk boxes contain 20, 1-lb frozen patties, available in four formulas: Texas Beef Stew, Chicka Chicka Bow Wow, Porky’s Luau and Turkey Pawella. Each patty is individually wrapped and vacuum sealed to maintain freshness and food safety.
Portland Pet Food Company’s first ever cat products are available in two flavors: Homestyle Meal Boots’ Salmon N’ Pumpkin and Homestyle Meal Luke’s Chicken N’ Pumpkin. The new line for cats is sourced and made in the United States and intended to be used as a rotational meal or topper to provide a fresh, natural boost to a cat’s regular diet.
Caru’s Balanced Omega Blend Stews and two Enriched Omega 3 Bone Broths are infused with Marine Microalgae Oil to deliver Omega 3 fatty acids. This non-fishy tasting oil is obtained from a sustainable, non-GMO algae strain and provides both EPA and DHA Omega 3 fatty acids which are essential for whole body health. The new products expand upon the company’s Classics line.
The company’s new Original Sensitive Skin & Stomach formula expands upon its line of dog food. This new grain-friendly recipe is veterinary nutritionist formulated and includes lamb and fish, ancient grains such as millet and sorghum, proteinated minerals, pumpkin, coconut oil and turmeric. Pumpkin promotes digestive health and coconut oil is rich in MCTs to help optimize brain function and gastrointestinal fat absorption in dogs with fat sensitivities.
Jiminy’s launched its new wet dog food formulas -- Cravin’ Cricket Entrée and Good Grub Entrée -- during Global Pet Expo this March. The Cravin’ Cricket Entrée recipe is formulated with carrots, green beans, garbanzo beans, pumpkin and crickets. The Good Grub Entrée is a complete and balanced meal for dogs that can also be used as a meal topper, formulated with carrots, green beans, sweet potato, flaxseed, pumpkin, and black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) insect protein.
Mosiac Pet Food expanded its exotic protein pet food portfolio to include ostrich proteins to create its South African Ostrich Jerky treats. The treats use the “entire ostrich.” The company also plans to use the exotic protein for other pet consumables, including hypoallergenic dog and cat food formulas, supplements, exotic body part chews, and other innovations.
LIQ Brands launched its first products, offering low-calorie treat options for pet owners: LIQ and Krunch. LIQ is a lickable treat dispensed from a patented bottle design, which can be easily held by the pet owner and licked by the dog. Krunch is an air crisp treat that delivers a satisfying crunch. The new LIQ and Krunch treats are meat-free, making them great for dogs with allergies and protein sensitivities.
