STATESVILLE, NC. — Blue Ridge Beef announced on Dec. 2 that it’s recalling two lots of its 2-lb Puppy Mix due to contamination of Salmonella. The recall includes lot numbers 08/06/N25 and 08/16/N25. 

The products were distributed between Aug. 6 and Aug. 23 and sold in retail stores located in Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York. 

The problem was discovered after a customer’s litter of puppies became ill and reported the issue to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Following this, the company was notified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that the products tested positive for Salmonella. 

Salmonella can affect both animals eating the product and humans handling it. The FDA recommends that any customers that have used the product monitor both their pets and their own symptoms. Consumers or pets exhibiting any signs of Salmonella infection should contact their health care provider or veterinarian. 

The FDA urges consumers who have purchased the product to return it to their place of purchase or destroy the food in a manner that children, pets and wildlife cannot access it.
