SYDNEY — Real Pet Food Co, a pet food manufacturer in Asia Pacific and maker of specialty pet nutrition brand Billy + Margot, has secured Australia’s first import permit for black soldier fly (BSF) meal for use in the manufacturing of pet food, according to the company. After two years researching protein alternatives, the company chose BSF meal as a key ingredient in its Billy + Margot Insect Single Protein + Superfoods dry dog food. The new product will be sold exclusively at Petbarn stores across Australia and online through Petbarn’s website.

“The Billy + Margot Insect Single Protein + Superfoods is an exciting and important innovation that fuels sustainable growth for Real Pet Food Co,” said Germaine Chua, chief executive officer of Real Pet Food Co. “We are committed to create a world where every pet eats fresher every day and the Billy + Margot launch achieves this, while also making positive strides toward driving sustainable practices in our operations that make a positive difference to the fresh future of our planet.”

The black soldier flies are grown in a quality-controlled environment and fed a traceable, responsibly sourced plant-based diet, according to the company. The insect is then dehydrated and finely ground into a meal before being added as the single protein source for the dog food formula.

Billy + Margot Insect Single Protein + Superfoods is rich in amino acids and contains TruMune™ postbiotics to support healthy digestion. Palatability testing showed canine satisfaction equivalent to other animal protein products in the Billy + Margot portfolio, the company said.

“As a canine nutritionist, I created Billy + Margot to provide the very best possible food for our best friends,” said Marie Jones, creator of Billy + Margot. “I understand that it [insect protein] is new and it may be difficult to understand, but trust me, there is nothing like it for sensitivities and overall health, and dogs love the taste of it.”
