NEW BEDFORD, MASS. — Northern Pelagic Group, LLC (NORPEL), a manufacturer of fresh and frozen land and sea proteins for use in pet food, recently released its first sustainability report. It details the company’s environmental efforts throughout 2023, specifically addressing its resource efficiency, waste reduction initiatives, sustainable sourcing practices, as well as its commitment to innovation and research, creating a circular economy, and contributing positively to the communities in which it operates.

“As the founder and president of NORPEL, it is my honor to present our 2023 Sustainability Report,” wrote Brady Schofield of NORPEL. “Since our founding in 2002, we’ve been steadfast in our commitment to creating a better world and better ingredients for pets through sustainable practices. This report highlights our ongoing efforts and achievements in sustainability, particularly our pivotal role in the circular economy.”

Since its launch into the pet food market in 2014, NORPEL has provided proteins for more than 550 million pet meals throughout the globe, according to the company. In 2023, the company received accreditation with the Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC), ramping up its environmental initiatives since originally joining the organization in 2021.

NORPEL’s operations are inherently sustainable, as it upcycles protein byproducts from fish and land animals to create valuable ingredients. According to the company, 99% of the volume of its seafood ingredients are from upcycled materials. This helps reduce strain on natural resources, helps lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and promotes a more sustainable food system, according to the company.

Additionally, in sourcing its seafood byproducts, NORPEL adheres to standards set by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), Aquaculture Stewardship Council, Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch and Oceanwise. For its land proteins, the company is a Step 2 certified processor of poultry products by the Global Animal Partnership (GAP).

In 2023, NORPEL worked with an electricity provider to take proactive measures in its energy utilization through voluntary operation suspensions. The company had 19 voluntary shutdowns, saving 48 hours of energy. For this year, the company is examining the potential of using renewable energy throughout its operations.

Regarding its social initiatives, NORPEL’s achievements for 2023 include passing a Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit (SMETA), demonstrating its commitment to ethical business practices and social responsibility; and appointing two new Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) managers to promote the health and safety of its workers. The company also invested heavily in local communities throughout the year.

Looking to 2024, NORPEL is focused on carbon accounting, tracking its Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions in order to reduce them in coming years. The company has also embarked upon a new partnership with FeedBack to reduce its waste. NORPEL will provide FeedBack with materials that would otherwise go to waste to be converted into feed and cardboard vessels.

“Our mission at NORPEL is to transform seafood and meat byproducts into premium, sustainable, high-quality proteins for pets,” Schofield added. “By upcycling these byproducts, we not only contribute to reducing waste but also create valuable, nutritious ingredients that support the health and wellbeing of pets around the world. This aligns with our vision of fostering a healthier planet and a better future for all.”
