OMAHA, NEB. — Agribusiness leader Scoular and Borneo-based seaweed biotech company SEADLING have formed an exclusive partnership to offer fermented dried seaweed powder as an ingredient for the formulation of pet food. The emerging superfood ingredient offers functional health benefits to pets, including improved skin and coat, gut health and dental hygiene, according to SEADLING.
“Pet parents increasingly are seeking pet food that boosts pet health and vitality,” said Evan Ibach, senior merchant for Scoular Pet. “SEADLING and Scoular are excited to bring this on-trend ingredient to North American manufacturers.”
Founded in 2018, SEADLING produces seaweed-based ingredients for various markets. The company produces its fermented dried seaweed powder using proprietary technology.
According to Birdie Scott Padam, head of product for SEADLING, the seaweed powder offers a range of functional health benefits to pets, including supporting brain function, bone development and cardiovascular health. The ingredient also offers essential minerals and vitamins, including vitamin K2 and potassium, which are often lacking in pet diets.
Seaweed also offers sought after sustainability benefits that many pet parents are looking for in the products they purchase. According to NielsenIQ’s Green Divide Report, 70% of consumers say sustainability is now more important when selecting products than it was two years ago.
Sustainable practices are a priority at SEADLING, according to Simon Davis, founder and chief executive officer. The company practices cultivation through farming, instead of wild harvesting, which creates a consistent product while maintaining the natural environment with little negative impact on other species, according to SEADLING.
“Sustainability is the heart of our business,” Davis said. “Our mission to elevate seaweed as a sustainable source of next-generation ingredients is inspired by the vision of a vibrant and healthy ocean supporting life on land.”
