PIERRE, S.D. — The Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) of South Dakota announced Jan. 20 that it awarded Royal Canin, a subsidiary of Mars Petcare, a Reinvestment Payment Program (RPP) grant of more than $3.9 million. The grant was awarded after the company announced plans to invest $185 million into its production facility in North Sioux City.
“I applaud Royal Canin’s continued investment in North Sioux City with this expansion,” said Governor Kristi Noem. “We are proud to provide a business climate that can help companies like Royal Canin grow and succeed.”
Royal Canin’s investment would allow the company to expand its existing facility and bring 149 new jobs to the city.
“Over the past two years, the country experienced a boom in pet ownership and heightened focus on pets’ health,” said Cecile Coutens, president of Royal Canin North America. “Royal Canin is seeing significant growth as a result. We want to continue to invest in our business to support these pets, their owners, and our professional partners. We already know what an incredible place the North Sioux City community is and are thrilled to expand our presence here.”
This isn’t the first time Royal Canin has expanded in North Sioux City. Six years ago, the company built a state-of-the-art facility in the area, showing a commitment to the residents of the city.
“Back in 2016, Royal Canin decided to build a new state-of-the-art facility,” said Steve Westra, commissioner of GOED. “Since then, they’ve continued to invest in their facility and this project is just the latest commitment to North Sioux City and South Dakota. We are pleased we could partner with them on their continued growth.”
According to the GOED, North Sioux City continues to attract companies like Royal Canin, hoping to create a booming economy with various job opportunities.
“Royal Canin is an innovative company and a valued member of the North Sioux City business community,” said Andrew Nilges, executive director of the North Sioux City Development Corporation. “Their products are known and trusted by pet owners around the world. North Sioux City is appreciative of Royal Canin choosing to expand here and are proud to collaborate with them on their expansion project.”
