The Pet Nutrition Alliance (PNA), an online consumer resource by the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) , has released a “Dare to Ask” tool, which pet owners can use to compare information from pet food producers on the nutritional and manufacturing standards of their brands.
Participating manufacturers and brands are requested to provide information on four topics: the use of contract manufacturers in producing the food; the involvement of nutritional experts in developing formulas; the percentage of manufacturing plants producing the pet food that are owned by the producer; and the nutritional level of a randomly specified nutrient.
Processors have the option of providing the information or withholding it. PNA explicitly lays out its full protocol to detail how the information is gathered and included into the Dare to Ask Manufacturer Report platform.
PNA also provides information to help consumers determine the optimal nutrition for their pets, as well as other external resources.
